Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran faced a troubling incident with a fan who told him to 'kill myself' after a play, prompting an investigation by the Twins. Duran acknowledged his inappropriate response but highlighted the triggering nature of such comments, especially given his past struggles with mental health.
MINNEAPOLIS â The Twins are investigating after Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran said a fan told him âto kill myselfâ after he grounded out in the fifth inning Tuesday at Target Field.
Duran reacted by giving the middle finger to the fan.
After the game, Duran said he should not have reacted that way but he said âthat kind of stuff is still kind of triggering.â Duran had previously opened up about a suicide attempt in the Netflix documentary, "The Clubhouse: A Year with the Red Sox," released April 8, 2025.
Manager Alex Cora said heâs not going to tell Duran how or how not to react in that situation.
âItâs hard. Iâm not in his shoes,â Cora said. âSo for me to say, âDonât react that way,â I donât know what he goes through. So I think for people to judge him because he did what he did, theyâre not in his shoes. Never been in his situation. This is a different situation than others. Itâs not that youâre struggling offensively and they say something and you react. Itâs something else. And itâs not for me to judge him or to say, donât react that way. The only thing I can do is tell him that Iâm here for him, that the organization is here for him, and weâre going to support him.â
This is not the first time Duran said that a fan made this type of remark. He stared and pointed into the stands at a fan at Clevelandâs Progressive Field on April 27, 2025, after the fan told him, âGo (expletive) kill yourself."
âIt sucks that it happened and that people take this window to be freaking (expletive),â Cora said. âI know the Twins are all over the case and trying to find out who he was. And hopefully they find the person.
âWe have Jarrenâs back,â Cora added. âLike I said last year, for him to open up, he saved lives. And people have their opinion about his reaction. We always talk to him, and tell him that weâre here for him and weâre going to support him.â
Cora said they also encourage Duran to let them know what is going on. After Tuesdayâs game, Duran said he didnât tell his coaches or teammates what happened because he didnât want to distract them.
âItâs not easy because like he said, weâre in the business of winning games, and he doesnât want to be a distraction, and heâs not a distraction,â Cora said. âHeâs not. Heâs just a player that plays for the Red Sox and has our full support.â
