Coming off a historically bad series against the New York Yankees at Fenway Park, the Boston Red Sox's offense showed encouraging signs of life in Friday'sĀ 10-3 road loss toĀ the Baltimore Orioles.
For starters, the Red Sox scored as many runsĀ -- threeĀ -- as they did during the entire Yankees series. They also banged outĀ 10 hitsĀ -- only three fewer than they had against New York this week.
Boston showed some pop, too, with itsĀ 15th home run of the year. Wilyer Abreu -- who's been hitting the ball hard lately -- doubled and homered, tying Willson Contreras for the team lead in homers with four.
Seven of the team's nine starters had at least one hit, so most of the lineup contributed, too.

However, the Red Sox continued to struggle with runners in scoring position, going just 1-for-8Ā in those situations. They also stranded seven baserunners.
While Boston's offense took a step forward, the pitching staff took a step back, surrenderingĀ 10 runs and 20 hits. The 20 hits allowed were easily a season-worst for the Red Sox, while theĀ 10 runs were their second-most allowed this year.
Most of that damage came against Brayan Bello, whose ERA rose to 9.00 after he allowed eight runs onĀ 13 hits in 3Ā 1/3 innings. He also served up five of the Orioles' six home runs on a night where the home team ran out of celebratory fireworks.
Boston's offense will try to build off Friday's performance on Saturday against Trevor Rogers. Meanwhile, Garrett Crochet will look to bounce back from a pair of rough outings and snap the Red Sox's four-game losing streak.
