The Red Sox rallied to defeat the Tigers 5-4, marking their first win of the season after trailing by two or more runs. Jarren Duran hit a crucial three-run homer, while Payton Tolle delivered a strong performance on the mound.
DETROIT â Instant reactions as the Red Sox (14-21) rally in the rain to beat the Tigers, 5-4, in the opener of a quick-three game road trip at Comerica Park:
1) The Red Sox did something they hadnât done all season before Monday: won a game in which they trailed by two or more runs. After allowing two runs on a pair of errors in the bottom of the sixth, Boston strung together a five-run rally â capped by another clutch three-run homer from Jarren Duran â to improve to 1-18 in games in which their opponent led by two or more.
The game was close despite the Sox outhitting the Tigers, 12-2, behind a very strong performance from Payton Tolle. Bostonâs offense had a lot of hits against a Tigers staff that was scrambling in the wake of ace Tarik Skubal being scratched hours before first pitch.
Wilyer Abreu and Marcelo Mayer each had RBI singles to extend the lead after Duran flipped a deficit into a lead and made it 3-2.
2) Separate of the score, the focus for the Red Sox will be on the status of Roman Anthony, who left the game in the second inning due to âright wrist discomfort.â
Anthony flexed his hand and wrist after fouling off a ball on a check swing in the first inning, but stayed in the game after a visit from interim manager Chad Tracy and head athletic trainer Brandon Henry. Minutes later, replaced Anthony in left field for the bottom of the second inning.
The Red Sox overcame a two-run deficit to win 5-4, highlighted by Jarren Duran's three-run homer.
Jarren Duran hit a pivotal three-run homer that helped the Red Sox take the lead and secure the win.
Payton Tolle had a dominant outing on the mound, contributing significantly to the Red Sox's victory.
This victory improved the Red Sox's record to 14-21 and marked their first win when trailing by two or more runs this season.

3) Outside of the sixth inning â when the Red Sox made a couple of rain-aided errors â Tolle was excellent. He struck out eight batters, allowed one hit and issued one walk in seven innings, allowing two unearned runs. Tolle was dominant from the jump and retired the first 12 Tigers he faced before Riley Greene led off the fifth with a rocket double to right.
The only runs that scored against Tolle came on back-to-back throwing errors by Carlos NarvĂĄez and Andruw Monasterio in the sixth.
Tolle pounded the strike zone throughout his outing, throwing 59 of his 83 pitches (71%) for strikes. It was the longest outing of his major league tenure to this point.
4) It was something of a miracle that play didnât stop earlier than it did. In the sixth, the Comerica Park video board told fans to take shelter immediately with heavy rain â and lightning â coming. The lower bowl completely cleared out in what looked like a scene from the 2020 MLB season, minus the cardboard cutouts.
By the bottom of the seventh, it was a monsoon in downtown Detroit. One pitch into the top of the eighth, umpires finally put a stop to things and the grounds crew put the tarp on the field. That delay lasted 28 minutes.
First pitch was moved up 30 minutes, from 6:40 p.m. to 6:10 p.m., but it didnât stop the weather from wreaking havoc later.
5) A shaky showing from Garrett Whitlock let Detroit back into the game in the eighth. The usually steady setup man let the Tigers turn a three-run game into a one-run game when he allowed two hits (including a two-run Dillon Dingler double) and a walk before striking out Greene with the tying run on second base to end the inning.
It was a different story in the ninth as closer Aroldis Chapman needed 13 pitches to set Detroit down in order.
6) When Duran homers, they are usually no-doubters to the pull side. His clutch blast in the seventh was anything but.
Hitting with the Red Sox suddenly down 2-0 and two men on after NarvĂĄez singled and Monasterio walked, Duran got a fastball down the middle and mishit it to the opposite field â while still hitting it hard enough to get out. Duranâs homer left the bat at 98.9 mph and traveled 381 feet with a 33-degree launch angle. It was his third homer in the last four games.
7) Under dry conditions, the Red Sox played a solid game defensively. Then, the rain came and Boston lost it, for at least a minute.
In a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth, the dominant-to-that-point Tolle hit Colt Keith with an inside pitch, then walked Jahmai Jones with one out. As Jones drifted off the first base bag, NarvĂĄez made the ill-advised decision to try to pick him off â and airmailed it over Willson Contrerasâ head to put two runners in scoring position. Matt Vierling then hit a chopper to Monasterio at third, but his wayward throw home (Bostonâs second throwing error in seconds) got away from NarvĂĄez and allowed both runs to score.
It was the rare instance where a club allowed two runs without giving up a hit in an inning. Through six, the Red Sox had no runs on six hits and the Tigers had two runs on no hits. Hard to do.
8) It wouldnât be a 2026 Red Sox game without a brutally frustrating example of an offensive chance gone to waste. That came in the third inning when Boston had two men in scoring position with no outs â and failed to score when Willson Contreras struck out, Monasterio ran into an out at the plate and Trevor Story chased a pitch out of the zone to end the inning.
Early on, it was more of the same for a club that went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position and stranded 13 runners Sunday. Overall, the Red Sox were 3-for-10 in such scenarios and stranded 10.
9) Duran led the way with three hits (his homer, plus two singles) and was one of four Red Sox batters with multiple hits. Yoshida (in replacement duty), Rafaela and Mayer each had two. Yoshida doubled in the big seventh inning.
10) The Red Sox continued their early-season trend of burning ABS challenges way too early in games. Mondayâs culprit? Abreu, who lost a challenge on an 0-2 pitch that ended the first inning.
11) Righty Brayan Bello (1-4, 9.12 ERA) will pitch Tuesday for the Red Sox, though the club may use an opener ahead of him in an effort to give him a different look as he tries to get back on track. The Tigers will send rough lefty Framber Valdez (2-1, 3.35 ERA) to the mound.
