BOSTON â Itâs been a week of unexpected major league debuts for the Red Sox.
On Sunday, hired only the previous night, Chad Tracy was a winner in his first game as a major league manager.
Five days later, one of his former players at Worcester, lefty starter Jake Bennett, also joined the club.
Bennett, pitching in a major league game for the first time, delivered five innings of one-run ball as the Red Sox defeated the Houston Astros 3-1 to start a brief homestand.
âFive innings, one run, against that lineup?â said Tracy. âPretty good job.â
Bennett, plugged into the rotation with Garrett Crochet (shoulder inflammation) on the IL, allowed five hits â four of them singles â to earn his first win while also securing a win for Tracy in his Fenway debut.
âJust an unreal experience,â said a beaming Bennett afterward. âWords really canât put it into perspective....dream come true. Incredible atmosphere, and Iâm super blessed to be able to do it.â
Bennett, after being scratched from a scheduled start the night before, was informed Wednesday night that he would be pitching for the parent club. That was time enough to get more than two dozen friends and family members to Fenway to watch his special night.
After all the build-up, Bennett felt âlike a weight lifted,â after throwing his first pitch. Obtained in an offseason deal for fellow pitching prospect Luis Perales, Bennett retired the first two hitters he faced before issuing back-to-back walks to Isaac Paredes and Christian Walker. But he got for the third out and began to settle in.

âDefinitely a grind with the two baserunners,â recounted Bennett. âI was just trying to slow the game down, take it one pitch at a time and just attack hitters.â
âYouâre watching (closely) for sure,â said Tracy of the brief struggles by Bennett in the first. âI remember thinking in that moment, I donât know if I remember seeing him walk back-to-back hitters at all in Worcester, in the time that we were there. But youâre also aware it is his debut. When he got the last out, I was like, âAlright, he got the first three outs. He gets to come sit down.â I felt like heâd settle in and the strike-throwing was pretty good after that.â
Bennett worked around some brief difficulty in the second on a two-out single, and survived a solo homer from Carlos Correa to start the third.
His biggest task came in the fifth. With his pitch count climbing, he was touched for a one-out single from Dustin Harris, with Correa and the ever-lethal Yordan Alvarez due next.
âThat was a decision to make, big-time,â acknowledged Tracy. âYouâre very aware that heâs going to be fatiguing. Getting the first out was big because if the first guy gets on (or) if they load the bases, this could be Yordan with the bases loaded. But he did a fantastic job.â
After Bennett came back to the dugout following the harrowing fifth, Tracy hugged his pitcher and commended him for a job well done.
The lefty became just the seventh pitcher in franchise history â and first since Juan Peña in 1999 â to start and allow one or no runs while earning a win in their major league debut at Fenway.
