The Boston Red Sox were slated to have one of the most lethal starting rotations in the league ahead of the season, but injuries and inconsistency have plagued the group early on this season.
One of Boston's key offseason additions, three-time All-Star pitcher Sonny Gray, was the first major blow that the team's rotation was dealt after the 36-year-old was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right hamstring sprain.
Gray last pitched on April 20, but barring any late setbacks, is set to make his return to the Red Sox's rotation without making a rehab start for the team's series finale against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday, according to interim manager Chad Tracy.
“Right now, all things point toward Sonny starting,” Tracy said Tuesday, per MassLive's Chris Cotillo. “We’re going to talk more about it after the game, but we’re heading in that direction.”
Gray's return could not come at a better time for Boston, as star pitchers Garrett Crochet and Ranger Suárez both have suffered injuries since the 36-year-old was placed on the IL.
Sonny Gray is set to return from the injured list soon, although the exact date has not been specified.

Though Suárez is still a candidate to start this weekend, with the Red Sox still not placing the left-handed pitcher on the injured list, Gray's return will alleviate some of the team's need to rely on rookie starters like Jake Bennett consistently.
Gray has struggled slightly in his handful of starts to open the season, posting a 4.30 ERA with 13 strikeouts in five games, but he will surely help bolster the starting rotation moving forward.
