Roman Anthony hasn't come close to sniffing the lofty hype entering the 2026 season. Along with the Boston Red Sox lineup, the outfielder's underwhelming start has hurt fantasy baseball investors.
Anthony went early in drafts amid growing MVP buzz, but the 21-year-old is batting .229 with one home run, five RBIs and two stolen bases through 30 games. One analyst believes the underwhelming start could represent an opportunity for shrewd fantasy managers.
The Athletic's Owen Poindexter identified Anthony as a player to "buy" despite the middling results thus far. However, he's not sure many other managers are ready to give up on Anthony.
"You probably wonât get too many bites here, because Anthony remains a premium talent, but the production has been disappointing in the early going," Poindexter noted. "The power hasnât shown up in the numbers, despite 91st percentile bat speed. Just remember that itâs early, Anthony is just 21, and he has played just over half a season in his MLB career. The fundamentals, namely his hit tool and raw power, are still very good. His 5% HR/FB rate will rise, and he should have a very good summer."
Anthony has actually improved his contact rate (74.4%) from last season while continuing to hit the ball with authority. He's maintained a healthy 92.3-mph average exit velocity and can score runs in bunches with an elite batting eye.
Although Anthony has missed the last two games with a , he's not expected to require a trip to the injured list. Fantasy managers may want to wait and see Anthony back in the lineup before making a trade offer, but that uncertainty could cause a nervous leaguemate to sell low on a player who still wields sky-high upside.

Analysts believe that his underwhelming start may present a buying opportunity for savvy fantasy managers looking to capitalize on potential future performance.
His struggles have negatively affected fantasy baseball investors, but some see potential for improvement as the season progresses.
