The Boston Red Sox are considering a trade for Houston Astros infielder Isaac Paredes after initial interest during the offseason. With Caleb Durbin's poor performance, the Red Sox may revisit this option as the trade deadline approaches.
The Boston Red Sox reportedly showed interest in Houston Astros infielder Isaac Paredes during the offseason, but a deal never happened, and the Red Sox added Caleb Durbin.
Durbin has struggled to start the season and is slashing .106/.208/.128. He has just five hits in 14 games and has not looked like the player he was last season. There is still plenty of time for him to turn things around. However, if the trade deadline approaches and he is still struggling, or if the Red Sox want to add another option earlier, they should circle back to Paredes.
The Astros opted not to deal him this offseason, but that could change now. He has a $13 million club option for next season and could have great trade value. The Astros need him right now with injuries piling up, however. With Jerelmy Peña going to the injured list, the Astros may not be able to part ways with Paredes right away.
Paredes would bring some more consistency to the Red Sox lineup. He is hitting just .225 right now, but he has a 117 OPS+ in the last two seasons. The Astros are 6-10 to start the season, and they may become sellers at the trade deadline. If that's the case, the Red Sox should be all over trading for Paredes.
However, teams make big trades well before the trade deadline as well. Just last season, the Red Sox traded away Rafael Devers in June. If Durbin does not turn things around, the Red Sox should be on the phone trying to see if the Astros are ready to revisit trade talks on Paredes.
Why are the Red Sox interested in trading for Isaac Paredes?
The Red Sox are interested in Isaac Paredes due to Caleb Durbin's struggles at the start of the season, prompting them to seek a stronger option.
What are Caleb Durbin's current statistics this season?
Caleb Durbin is currently slashing .106/.208/.128 with just five hits in 14 games.
When is the MLB trade deadline in 2023?
The MLB trade deadline in 2023 is set for August 1, giving teams a limited time to make trades.
