In-season signings are always interesting to unpack, even if they involve players who undoubtedly need some seasoning in the minor leagues.
That's precisely what Raymond Burgos represents for the Boston Red Sox. The 27-year-old, who has just one major league game under his belt, is getting ready to join the Boston organization at Triple-A Worcester after a strong stint with Team Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic earlier this spring.
After his agency, MAS Sports reported the transaction earlier in the week, Burgos officially signed with the Red Sox on Thursday, per the transactions log on his MiLB.com roster page.
Burgos began the season playing for Guerreros de Oaxaca in the Mexican League. He allowed seven earned runs and struck out just eight batters in his 12 innings there before getting the call from the Red Sox, but he only allowed 12 hits and two walks.
Before his time in Mexico and the independent Carolina League, Burgos spent seven seasons in the Cleveland Guardians and San Francisco Giants farm systems. He made his major league debut for one game in 2024 with the Giants, but after he was great in Triple-A that season, he was equally brutal last year and found himself released.
The Red Sox also transferred left-hander Erik Rivera from Worcester to Double-A Portland to make room for Burgos in the bullpen. Catcher/first baseman Nathan Hickey was placed on the development list.
