Payton Tolle’s recall and immediate success already put Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Brayan Bello in the hot seat, but now, the heat’s being turned up. After Red Sox No. 6 prospect Jake Bennett’s debut, it seems the Sox have multiple young starters ready to step up.
Bennett got the win yesterday, going five innings, getting three Ks, and only giving up one run. While he’s currently filling in for Garrett Crochet, he’s making an argument to be part of the rotation. And on the flip side, Bello is providing good reasons to be taken out of it.

Last season, Bello was a low 3.00 ERA pitcher who won more than he lost. Now, this season, he’s completely fallen apart. So far, he’s posted a 1-4 record, a 9.12 ERA, 17 Ks, and a WHIP of 2.260 over 25 innings pitched.
If he were a qualified pitcher, he would be the worst pitcher in baseball by far.

As previously stated, his replacements are knocking. With Sonny Gray about to return from the IL, Boston’s No.1 prospect Payton Tolle will lose his temporary spot in the rotation. However, in his MLB stint this season, he’s posted an 0-2 record, a 3.38 ERA, 15 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.031 in 10 innings pitched.
He has almost as many Ks as Bello with half the WHIP. Plus, his ERA is not accurate to his actual pitching ability, as his FIP is 2.95. This means that .43 difference is due to the fielding behind him.
Add Jake Bennett to the equation, and the Sox have multiple young arms that could come into the rotation at a moment’s notice.

Bello has one thing going for him, and that’s the fact he’s a righty. Boston’s Opening Day lineup was three lefties, two righties. Now, if Bello were to be replaced, they’d only have one righty.
However, If Boston is comfortable with that mismatch, then Bello really has nothing going for him. Only time will tell what will happen, and more likely than not, it means Bello getting demoted.
