Red Wings edge Syracuse in rain-shortened road win

The Rochester Red Wings defeated the Syracuse Mets 3-2 in a rain-shortened, six-inning game Tuesday at NBT Bank Stadium in Syracuse.

Rochester moved back to .500 at 17-17, while Syracuse fell to 18-15.

Syracuse took an early lead in the first inning when Nick Morabito singled, stole second and scored on a Ryan Clifford single.

Rochester responded in the fourth inning, scoring all three of its runs with two outs. Harry Ford walked and Yohandy Morales was hit by a pitch. Andrs Chaparro tied the game with an RBI single, Morales scored on a wild pitch and Robert Hassell III added an RBI single to give the Red Wings a 3-1 lead.

Syracuse cut the deficit to 3-2 in the sixth inning. Morabito singled and was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double, Clifford doubled and later scored on a Cristian Pache single.

Shawn Dubin started for Rochester, allowing one run on two hits over one inning, striking out two and walking one. Riley Cornelio followed with 4⅔ innings of one-run ball, giving up three hits and two walks with five strikeouts to earn the win. Zach Penrod recorded the final out of the sixth with two runners on base to notch his first save.

Rochester Red Wings offensive highlights

Rochester managed just four hits but went 2-for-3 with runners in scoring position. Morales reached twice, singling and scoring, while Chaparro finished 1-for-3 with an RBI. Hassell went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a stolen base, his third of the season.

Ford scored a run and drew one of the Red Wings’ two walks. Phillip Glasser added the other hit on a soft infield single but was later caught stealing by Ben Rortvedt.
