(Editorās Note: This is the first installment of a player-by-player analysis of Detroit Red Wingsā roster for the 2025-26 season. The emphasis is on how each player performed and their future in the organization.)
Age: 37, turns 38 in November.
Contract Status: An unrestricted free agent on July 1.
Last seasonās contributions: Fifth on the team in scoring with 57 points in 67 games
Grade: B+
Near the end of the season, when the Detroit Red Wings were officially out of the playoffs for a 10th consecutive season, Patrick Kane became the 24th player in NHL history to reach 1,400 points. Earlier in the season, Kane had passed Mike Modano to become the American-born with the most NHL points. He also later scored his 500th NHL goal
āIn a miserable month, heās kind of the bright spot, something to cheer about, getting excited for,ā coach Todd McLellan said.
It isnāt a stretch to say that Kaneās record chase and offensive play, particularly his contributions to Alex DeBrincatās 41-goal season, were among the highlights in a Detroit season that was ruined by another bad March. This was a team that struggled at even strength, but Kane and DeBrincat combined for 40 even-strength goals.
Twenty-six (63.4%) of DeBrincatās 41 goals were even-strength and 14 (87.5%) of Kaneās 16 goals. Kane registered 38 (66.6%) out his 57 points at even-strength. Kane and DeBrincat led the team in even-strength scoring from the Olympic break on.
The Red Wings' offense is currently struggling to score goals, and adding Patrick Kane could provide the necessary boost to improve their performance.
The analysis emphasizes how each player performed during the previous season and their future prospects within the organization.
The Red Wings had a goal-starved offense, indicating significant struggles in scoring throughout the last season.
Signing Patrick Kane could potentially revitalize the Red Wings' offense and enhance their chances of success in the upcoming season.

āFive on five, he and Cat (were) by far two leaders in that category,ā McLellan said. āAnd we are obviously short in that kind of scoring.ā
In March, when the Red Wings were collapsing, Kane registered 14 points in 13 games. The connection Kane has with DeBrincat seems otherworldly.
āTheyĀ findĀ eachĀ otherĀ soĀ well,Ā similarĀ toĀ whenĀ theyĀ playedĀ inĀ Chicago,ā Detroit captain Dylan Larkin said.Ā āItāsĀ impressive.Ā ThoseĀ guysĀ driveĀ offense.ā
Patrick Kane is not as dominant as he once was. As a small, aging player, he has had difficulty staying healthy. He has missed 57 games (23.1% of the Red Wings games) in three seasons in Detroit.
But the offensive instincts are still there, and his ability to carry the puck into the offensive zone is vital. No one on the roster controls the puck more effectively at even-strength and on the power play. The consistency is there: He has 57 goals over three seasons.
With 57 points in 67 games last season, he registered two fewer points in five fewer games than in the previous season.
Patrick Kane has said thereās mutual interest in him re-signing with Detroit, although we are assuming he will have questions about what the roster will look like. Undoubtedly, the three-time Stanley Cup champion is weary of missing the playoffs.
He is going to want to know if the team can add more offense. Are the Red Wings going to be able to find more goals
āIād love to be part of the solution that helps us get over the hump for sure,ā Kane said. ā(Thereās) interest to come back, continue my career here. Itās been a great spot for me, my family,Ā my son. Itās. Itās been a great spot to continue my career. Iāve definitely enjoyed my time here.ā
Frankly, the Red Wings very much need to re-sign Kane. Even if they re-sign Kane, they would like to add two forwards to play in their top six. Given the weak UFA market, that mission will be hard enough. If they canāt get Kane back, it will be next to impossible.
Kane doesnāt fit into the teamās new mandate to be harder to play against. But the Red Wings will be looking at others to do that heavy lifting. All the Red Wings desire from Kane is for him to deliver 50-plus points for another season. They canāt live without his points. Given how well he fits in the Detroit dressing room and his comfort level with the city, we believe Kane will re-sign with Detroit.
Next contract projection: $4 million base pay and $3.5 million in performance bonuses on a one-year contract.
