So near, and yet so far.

The Detroit Red Wings, who rallied from.a 3-1 deficit to tie the game in the third period, saw Alex DeBrincat get the puck to start overtime and skate in unimpeded toward the Tampa Bay goal.

But DeBrincat, who tied the game late in the third period, couldn’t convert on the chance. Tampa Bay took off on a breakaway of its own, and Nikita Kucherov ended things with a goal just 27 seconds into the extra period.

David Perron gave the Wings a 1-0 lead early, but after a second Red Wings goal was waved off, Tampa Bay tied the score on Conor Geekie’s first goal of the season near the end of the periiod.

Tampa Bay saw. a goal waved off early in the second period, but the Lightning responded by increasing the pressure on the Red Wings. Their persistence paid off on scores by Erik Cernak and Jake Guentzel.

Marco Kasper made it close with a third-period goal.

The win gives Tampa a shot at home-ice advantage in their first-round series with Montreal. They can clincn that wih a win Wednesday at home against the New York Rangers.
