Minnesota Wild defenseman Jake Middleton reflects on a critical moment in Game 5 against the Colorado Avalanche, where a late goal by Nathan MacKinnon tied the game. The Wild ultimately lost the series in overtime.
Wild defenseman Jake Middleton was between a rock and a hard place as the seconds ticked down on Game 5 in Denver last Wednesday.
With Avalanche goaltender Scott Wedgewood pulled for an extra attacker, Nathan MacKinnon had the puck on his stick in the left circle, and Middleton was the closest Wild player.
With MacKinnon on a tight angle, Middleton cheated toward blocking his path for a centering pass, but the Avsâ superstar center took a shot instead, sending a hard wrister over Jesper Wallstedt and into the near corner to tie the game, 3-3, with 1 minute, 23 seconds remaining.
âItâs still pretty fresh, right?â Middleton told reporters as the Wild cleaned out their lockers and went through end-of-year physicals at Grand Casino Arena. âItâs almost just an empty kind of numb feeling, even right now.â
Middleton was on the ice for 13 of Coloradoâs 24 goals in the five-game series, and the last three in the Avsâ 4-3 overtime victory that clinched the series at Ball Arena.
âI watch my shifts every game, I go back and watch them,â he said. âThereâs obviously times that you make a poor decision and it goes in the net; I donât think that was the case for the majority of the playoffs. But it definitely felt like any time a puck went in the net, I was on the ice. It was a (lousy) feeling, but there was.â
Game 5 hurt more than most losses because the Wild had taken a 3-0 lead with a dominating first period, then took some big shots from Colorado to remain up, 3-1, with less than four minutes left in regulation.
On MacKinnonâs tying goal in Game 5, Middleton was in a tough spot. Down a man, the Wild want their defenders to stay near the net instead of challenging a player with the puck, Middleton said.
âOur system is the D stay tight at the net,â he said. âItâs not really our block. If itâs a one-timer, quick play, youâre going to try to make yourself big and be in that lane. But from where heâs standing, our system is weâve gotta stay netfront and be ready for any chaos that could happen there.â
And, Middleton added, âThatâs a hell of a shot, too.â
The Wild had their chances late, as well. came within inches of making it 4-1 in regulation when he hit the cross bar with a slap shot from the point. In overtime, âs point-blank one-timer from the slot was swallowed up by a sliding Wedgewood.

âYeah. It kinda stings,â said McCarron, who played well for the Wild after being acquired at the trade deadline. âIâve thought about that a lot the past 48 hours.â
It was a quick chance on a two-on-one breakaway with Matt Boldy.
âTheir D played great on that rush, forced Bolds into a quick pass. It was a little in front of me,â McCarron said. âI just knew if I tried to get it off with a one-timer it was probably a goal.
âLooking back, I probably should have caught it on my backhand and taken my time, but in that split second, you get that to the net, the goalieâs in the corner. So, coulda, shoulda, woulda.â
McCarron finished his postseason with a pair of goals and four points, a plus-2. Middleton was on the ice for 10 Wild goals and had an assist, a minus-2 in 11 games.
âYou look back, itâs not â how do I say it? If I was making mistakes and I wasnât playing my (butt) off, I would feel a lot worse sitting up here talking to you guys,â he said Friday. âBut I do think it was just a situation where the (pucks) just went in, you know?â
