United are still monitoring higher profile options. Elliot Anderson remains admired despite Manchester City’s interest inflating his likely fee. Carlos Baleba continues to attract attention, while Aurelien Tchouameni represents the sort of aspirational signing that would electrify supporters if circumstances allowed.

Yet Ederson perhaps makes the most sense in footballing terms. Athletic, tactically disciplined and capable of carrying possession through midfield, he offers qualities United have lacked too often in high intensity matches.

Squad Depth Becoming Priority

One of the more telling lines from the Manchester Evening News report concerns squad depth. United “plan to sign at least two midfielders this summer”, recognition that the issue extends beyond replacing individual players.

Ederson’s 178 appearances for Atalanta suggest durability and reliability, two qualities increasingly valuable in a Premier League season shaped by relentless schedules and physical demands.

Whether he becomes the headline signing remains unclear. But there is growing evidence that United’s recruitment team are trying to build a midfield with greater balance rather than simply chasing reputation.

Manchester United supporters will probably greet this report with cautious optimism. Ederson may not instantly dominate social media compilations or trigger the same excitement as Tchouameni, but fans have watched enough chaotic midfield displays to appreciate substance over celebrity.

There is also growing fatigue among supporters regarding expensive signings who arrive with enormous reputations but struggle with the physical and tactical realities of English football. Ederson feels different. He looks built for intensity, pressing and transitional football, exactly where United have repeatedly been exposed.

Fans would also recognise the logic behind signing multiple midfielders. Too often over recent seasons, United have relied on ageing legs or players asked to perform unsuitable roles. Depth matters again at elite clubs, particularly when competing across several competitions.

There may still be frustration if rivals land names perceived to be more glamorous. But many supporters would likely accept a well constructed midfield over another summer driven by marketing appeal.
