Mateus Fernandes’ future at West Ham United already appears uncertain, despite only arriving from Southampton last summer in a £38million deal.

According to The Athletic, there has been “an increase in the number of European scouts attending games at the London Stadium” to watch the 21-year-old, with Paris Saint-Germain among his suitors.

Fernandes has delivered five goals and four assists in 40 appearances, becoming central to West Ham’s survival push. His long-range goal in the 3-1 win over Sunderland underlined why elite clubs are watching closely.

West Ham Prepare for Difficult Decision

West Ham are reportedly planning for life without Fernandes, with The Athletic stating that sources believe the club have “conceded Fernandes will be sold to help fund their summer recruitment.”

That is a striking position. Fernandes signed a five-year deal, with an option for another year, and has no release clause. West Ham therefore retain leverage, though Southampton’s 15 per cent sell-on clause complicates the final profit.

From a West Ham supporter’s perspective, this report is exhausting. We finally get a young, exciting midfielder who actually improves the team, fills the Paqueta gap and gives the crowd something to believe in, and within months we are already hearing he may be sold.

That is the part that hurts. Fernandes has not been some luxury player. He has carried responsibility in a struggling side, shown courage on the ball and delivered in big moments. A club with ambition should be building around that, not treating him as the next accounting solution.

Yes, West Ham need recruitment funds. Yes, PS G can offer Champions League football and huge prestige. But supporters are tired of seeing progress immediately converted into profit. Fernandes should be a statement of intent, not another example of short-term thinking.

If he goes, West Ham must not dress it up as strategy unless the replacement plan is exceptional. Selling your best young player after one season tells fans exactly where the club believes it belongs. Fernandes may have outgrown West Ham, but that says as much about the club’s direction as it does about his talent.
