The USA have confirmed their captain for the 2027 Ryder Cup, with Jim Furyk set to lead the visitors at Adare Manor.
Furyk will reprise his role from 2018, when the USA were defeated 17.5-10.5 by Team Europe at Le Golf National in France.
Since then, Europe have won two of the last three editions of the prestigious tournament, going back-to-back in 2023 and 2025.
Many US Ryder Cup fans aren’t happy with Furyk being named as the team’s captain, with Rex Hoggard now sharing his take on the decision.
Speaking on the Golf Channel Podcast with Rex & Lav, he said: “If you go back to Paris, when he was captain last time around, and you break down a lot of his decisions, a lot of them were questionable.
“I will start with his captain’s picks on that particular golf course, it did not seem that he made good choices with some of his pairings.
“All of that being said, I guess I keep coming back to the idea of why do Ryder Cup captains, either US or Europeans, only get one turn?
“USA basketball seem to have it right. You have the coach who is the coach for a decade or longer. You have the continuity and all that institutional knowledge that goes into it.
“Why not give Jim Furyk two or three tries? Why not give a Davis Love two or three tries? My guess is that Jim Furyk learned a lot in Paris that he is going to apply next year in Ireland.
“He learned a lot about what not to do in Paris, that I hope he applies in Ireland! So I tend to agree he is the captain that we probably need because there wasn’t another option out there.
“There was a shortlist this time around and unlike last time the PGA of America did not get blindsided this time around by Tiger Woods. He withdrew his name to be captain this year.
Jim Furyk has been named the USA Ryder Cup captain for 2027.

“So they had another list they could go to and clearly Jim Furyk was at the top of plan B. I would say it is probably the best option, given everything else that is going on out there.”

Giving captains multiple attempts has been an approach adopted by the Europeans, with Luke Donald set to lead the side for the third successive event.
But that is certainly understandable, with the Englishman having overseen superb victories in Rome 2023 and Bethpage Black 2025.
Donald is looking forward to his battle with Furyk, who was edged out by Thomas Bjorn in his first spell as USA captain.
Furyk has a worrying Ryder Cup record, which along with Donald’s ongoing success may give the hosts plenty of confidence.
A figure like Woods may have been more formidable for the home players and fans, but the legendary figure recently turned down the role as he continues to focus on improving his physical and mental health.
Momentum is also with Team Europe, while home advantage is another factor helping them earn the title of strong favorites at Adare Manor.
That eases the pressure on Furyk, but at the same time he’ll be under the spotlight and desperate to prove his credentials after the damaging loss in Paris in 2018.
