Liverpool's defence has been rather dodgy this season.

Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk have been fractions of their former selves with neither of the centre-backs meeting the standards expected of them.

Others such as Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong have also been off the pace with most teams that Liverpool face managing to beat them by a decent margin.

Indeed, injuries to players such as Joe Gomez, Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley haven't helped matters much but, with the number of games that the aforementioned quartet have played with one another, you'd have at least expected them to be getting back on track.

However, since that doesn't seem like it's going to happen, several new defenders are already being linked with an Anfield switch with one Premier League star only able to join the club on one condition.

Even though Jeremy Jacquet has already been signed ahead of the summer transfer window, Liverpool still need at least one more centre-back, especially if Gomez ends up exiting.

Leoni will also be like a new signing due to his injury with the Italian likely to be the Reds' third choice going into the 2026-27 campaign.

But, since clubs know that Liverpool will need defensive reinforcement, they need to cast their net far and wide in order to figure out the best possible deal for the best possible player.

And, as per an update from talkSPORT, if Konate chooses against extending his contract, a Premier League star could be on his way to Anfield.

"Liverpool have not yet made any formal contact with Senesi, but the Argentine was a player current sporting director Richard Hughes signed from Feyenoord in 2022 when working at Bournemouth," they wrote.

"Any move for Senesi will likely depend on Ibrahima Konate, who is out of contract in the summer and is yet to sign a new deal at Anfield.

"Despite reports Konate is close to extending at Anfield, talkSPORT understands there has been no breakthrough in talks yet.

"Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet is set to join the Reds in the summer in a deal worth £55million plus £5m in add-ons, but they could still look to sign another centre-back."

Marcos Senesi would be a smart transfer for Liverpool
