PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh High baseball team gave Peru a scare Tuesday before losing 5-3.
The Hornets took it one step farther in the rematch Wednesday with a 3-1 win over the Nighthawks in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference play.
Diego Rios went six innings to get the pitching win as he allowed three hits, one earned run, walked six and struck out eight. Cooper Holland recorded the save in the game as he allowed a walk and fanned two in the seventh.
Losing pitcher Kalib Smith went the six innings. He surrendered six hits, three earned runs, walked two and struck out six.
“I’m proud with how our team responded after yesterday’s game,” PHS coach Joe Tolosky said. “We knew it was going to be another battle and credit to Peru. They are a skilled baseball team.
“Diego had an outstanding performance for us on the mound against another quality opponent. It started with him, and Cooper came in a tough spot to get the job done.”
Kal Abernethy accounted for three of the Hornets’ six hits.
“Kal came up big for us, driving in two runs with two outs and giving us the momentum back after they had tied the game,” Tolosky said.

“We did get out of a couple of jams, which helped, but at the end of the day, we need to be better and have no one to blame but ourselves for our mistakes.”
