NEW YORK — The first two and a half months have been unkind to the Mets.
But Thursday’s Star Wars Day brought a pair of firsts that’ll fill the entire Mets clubhouse with smiles:
Rookie outfielder A.J. Ewing hit his first big league home run in what became the Mets’ first series sweep of the season in a 9-4 victory against the Detroit Tigers at Citi Field.
Ewing’s solo shot, off of Tigers starter Keider Montero, came in the first inning with his team down 3-0 following Gage Workman’s three-run homer in the top half of the frame.
It was one of seven straight Mets runs that eventually lifted the team to its third straight victory — one short of the team’s longest win streak of the season.
Brett Baty’s two-run homer in third tied the score at three, and Juan Soto put the Mets in front after an RBI single in the fifth. Mark Vientos followed Soto with his fifth home run of the season to put the Mets up, 6-3.
The Mets piled on with solo shots by Soto and Marcus Semien in the fifth and eighth inning, respectively.
Just like that, the Mets bats are alive after looking dead during a dreadful 12-game skid months ago. And the team looks smart for calling up Ewing, who is 3 for 9 with four walks and four runs since joining the big club.
The runs were plenty of support for Mets starter Nolan McLean, who allowed just three runs in seven innings of work. He allowed three walks and six hits while striking out seven. and followed to close out the series.
