After being haunted by Augusta National for years, Rory McIlroy graced the grounds like he owned them in 2026.
He totally understood the role of the reigning Masters champion. McIlroy was present for the Augusta National Womenâs Amateur and the Drive, Chip and Putt events early in the week, donning the Green Jacket with authority.
And once he took to the course to defend his Masters title, he looked completely at home at a place that once gave him fits. McIlroy took frequent trips to Augusta in the build-up to the tournament and admitted that it felt like his home course in his championâs press conference.
Augusta National could not have asked for better representation from their champion, and they will be delighted that he will return next year with the Green Jacket. And thatâs why he is predicted to follow in the footsteps of Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer.

Rory McIlroy predicted to become a full member of Augusta National
Having become the fourth person ever to win back-to-back Masters, Dan Rapaport predicted that McIlroy will be promoted from honorary member of Augusta National to a full member of the club.
Rapaport said on Dan on Golf, âI think Rory McIlroy will become the next in the very, very, short list of professional golfers who become members of Augusta National. Iâm not just talking about the past champions who are honorary members; Iâm talking like a full-on member of the club.
âJack Nicklaus is a member, Ben Crenshaw is a member, Arnie is a member, Annika Sorenstam is a member, and I think Rory will.
âHeâs now a multiple Masters winner, and you think about the other multiple Masters winners in our generation. I donât think Tigerâs getting it. A little too much off the course stuff. I donât think Philâs getting it. A little too much off the course stuff. I donât think Bubbaâs getting it. Doesnât scream Augusta member.
âI think Rory McIlroy is sort of the perfect ambassador for Augusta National.â
If last week was a trial run for this role, then McIlroy passed with flying colors.
The difference between honorary and full membership of Augusta National
Winning the Masters grants a player honorary membership at Augusta National, which allows them to use the facilities and play the course.
Full membership, which involves paying dues, wearing the Green Jacket outside of the tournament, and voting rights on key decisions, is exceptionally rare for former players.
Historically, only a number of legendary players have been invited to join as full members. Nicklaus, a six-time champion, was invited to become a full member in the late 1990s. He is currently the only male living former player with full membership status.
Four-time champion Arnold Palmer was invited to join as a full member in 2004. He remained a full member until his passing in 2016. And Sorenstam became the first former LPGA player to become a full member after Augusta National allowed women to join in 2012.
Augusta National maintains a strict distinction between the pros and the members. This is partly because the club was founded by Bobby Jones, who, despite being one of the greatest golfers in history, famously maintained his amateur status for the vast majority of his career.
The club generally prefers its members to be captains of industry, political figures, or high-profile amateurs rather than professional athletes.
Chairman Fred Ridley never played professionally. He was a career amateur and won the 1975 U.S. Amateur), but has since become a major political figure in the golf world. Another key member, John Harris, is a former PGA Tour Champions player and 1993 U.S. Amateur winner who is a member of the club.
Thatâs why McIlroyâs potential membership would be so historic, but one that seems likely to happen in the future.
