It was not at all surprising to see Rory McIlroy make his first competitive start since winning The Masters at the Truist Championship this week.
McIlroy won at Augusta National last month despite not playing on the PGA Tour for several weeks leading into the first major of the year.
Of course, the Northern Irishman has an amazing record at Quail Hollow across his career. So many would have expected the 37-year-old to make a statement leading into the PGA Championship.
However, McIlroy looks set to miss out on the top 10 at the Truist Championship for only the fourth time in 15 visits this week.
And it is particularly concerning ahead of Aronimink next week that one part of his game completely let him down on Saturday at Quail Hollow.
McIlroy noted on the New Heights podcast this week that it was his short game that won him The Masters for a second time.
The game has arguably never seen anyone who drives the ball better than Rory McIlroy. Meanwhile, his putting has also become a real strength in the last few years.
But it was around the green where McIlroy shone at Augusta National. According to Data Golf, Patrick Cantlay was the only player to perform better in that category of the players who made the cut.
Rory McIlroy's chances of winning the PGA Championship have been negatively affected after his recent competitive performance.

It was a sign that McIlroy had found a way to win the biggest events without his best form.
But those of us tempted to get carried away were provided with something of a wake-up call on Saturday at the latest signature event on the PGA Tour.
Data Golf shows that McIlroy was the worst player in the field for strokes gained around the green in the third round. He lost 3.46 shots in that category, with the next worst performer losing 2.72 strokes.
McIlroy’s legacy is no longer going to be impacted by the weeks where he struggles to shine on the PGA Tour. However, he would have surely expected to gain some real confidence from his showing this week – on a golf course he has performed so well on.
The worry for some will be that McIlroy is experiencing some of the same problems that emerged following his victory at The Masters last year.
That was such a significant moment in golfing history that it was no surprise that he struggled to find his purpose for some time after.
He subsequently finished tied for 47th at the PGA Championship, which also took place at Quail Hollow. And many will probably remember his week at the US Open for his childish behaviour towards the media.
McIlroy made sure to not celebrate this Masters win for quite as long. But that is surely easier said than done when it comes to getting back to work and trying to keep the foot on the accelerator.
In truth, it should come as no surprise to see McIlroy put this week behind him and contend at the PGA Championship. But it may be another part of his game that needs to step up for that to happen.
