Arriving at Churchill Downs from Vancouver, Canada, Jessica Prasad proved she'd done her homework. She stepped onto the grounds in a sophisticated puffâsleeve mini dress splashed with pale yellow, sunflower tones and soft gray florals â a look that struck the perfect balance between bold and refined for her first Kentucky Derby.
"What I knew about the Derby was the fashion is big, bold and fun, but I'll be honest, I was a little nervous," she said. "Looking around, I feel like a hit the target. I don't know that I'll ever be able to wear this dress again anywhere else, but for today, it's just so fun."

If pink reigns supreme on Kentucky Oaks Day, the Kentucky Derby, known as the "Run for the Roses," belongs wholeheartedly to red. And on May 2, that theme bloomed everywhere. Crimson dresses, scarlet hats, ruby fascinators accented with black, white and gold feathers, netting or bows and sharp red sports coats added a punch of tradition throughout the crowd.
For Amy Rudy, the rose-red theme was a head-to-toe triumph. She paired a vivid red wrap jacket with a blackâandâwhite polkaâdot top, crisp white slacks and colorful sandals dotted with tiny redâandâblack ladybugs â a motif she echoed with miniature lapel pins and scattered throughout her hat.
"Oh honey, when it comes to Derby, we donât mess around," Rudy told The Courier Journal. "I was in Spain when I found this great red jacket, and I knew it could get me through a cold or warm Derby weekend."
And while bold color ruled the day, bold prints were having their own moment. Christine Moore, a featured milliner for the 152nd Kentucky Derby, said the track was practically a runway of statement patterns.
âThe most polished looks balance that energy with a clean, graceful silhouette," she said. "When youâre wearing something bold, a simple, elegant hat or fascinator keeps the whole outfit sophisticated instead of overwhelming.â
From daring florals to graphic geometrics, 2026 Derby fans embraced the drama and Mooreâs advice proved true. The best looks were thoughtful, anchored by smart styling and a sense of play that makes Derby fashion its own sport.
