Last week, Liverpool legend Andy Robertson announced that he would depart the club at the end of the 2025-26 season when his current contract expires and the 32-year-old Scotland international becomes a free agent.
When it comes to where he might end up next season, there had been two persistent rumours in recent months. One involved a return to Scotland, potentially to re-join boyhood club Celtic. The other involved Tottenham, whom he almost joined in January.
According to The BBCâs Sami Mokbel, itâs the Tottenham chatter we should perhaps pay most attention to, with the player in conversation with the London club since that failed January move and talks said to be advanced.
With Liverpool head coach Arne Slot having handed the starting job at left back to Milos Kerkez without making him earn it and in the process relegating Robertson to a bit-part role, Robertson had signalled an openness to joining Spurs mid-season.
The deal though fell apart when the Reds couldnât convince Roma to terminate the loan of Kostas Tsimikas to cover for Robertsonâs departure, ensuring he would see out his contract and final season with Liverpool.
However, a rather important caveat in all of this is that joining Tottenham in the summer, while talks are advanced and Spurs are said to be Robertsonâs preferred destination, will only go through if the London club manage to survive in the Premier League.
At the moment they arenât favourites to do so, having dropped into the relegation places over the weekend and now sat two points 17th-place West Hamâthough Tottenham do currently have a slightly better goal differential.
