New York Giants rookie linebacker Arvell Reese has landed in the perfect situation to begin his NFL career, says former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier.
In an exclusive interview with Kyle Odegard, Shazier assessed Reese’s situation with the Giants as one that offers many advantages from a coaching perspective.
"John Harbaugh is a great defensive coach,” Shazier said. “He’s had some linebackers. He had Ray Lewis, Patrick Queen. He’s had a lot of inside linebackers, but he also had Terrell Suggs, (Matthew) Judon, a lot of great players (on the edge). He’s going to know exactly where to put Arvell. He has four great rushers and I think he’s going to move them around a lot. Harbaugh knows what he’s doing, so I think (Reese) landed in a great situation with a great coach.”
Reese viewed himself as an outside linebacker and edge rusher at the NFL level before the 2026 NFL draft, but Harbaugh intends to use the Ohio State product as an inside linebacker for the Giants as he begins his career in 2026.
Shazier, the last Ohio State linebacker to be named an All-American before Reese and Sonny Styles in 2025, is confident that Coach Harbaugh can develop Reese into a multi-positional force for the Giants.
Reese will benefit from Super Bowl-level coaching right from the start as a rookie in 2026.

Arvell Reese is expected to play as an inside linebacker for the New York Giants, despite initially viewing himself as an outside linebacker and edge rusher.
John Harbaugh has coached notable linebackers such as Ray Lewis and Patrick Queen, showcasing his ability to develop talent at that position.
