The New Orleans Saints are bringing in a familiar face for defensive coordinator Brandon Staley, as former third-round pick JT Woods is set to try out during rookie minicamp this weekend per KPRC2's Aaron Wilson. Woods, a former member of the Los Angeles Chargers, was drafted in 2022 while Staley was the head coach in Los Angeles. Following his departure in 2023, Woods has been in search of a new opportunity, spending time with several teams including the Philadelphia Eagles, Chicago Bears, Seattle Seahawks, Las Vegas Raiders, and the New York Jets. Most recently, he had a tryout with the Cleveland Browns just a few weeks ago.
Known for his size and athleticism, Woods stands at 6-foot-2, 195 pounds, and ran a 4.36-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine. He brings intriguing physical traits to the secondary, particularly for a Saints team that has emphasized adding speed on both sides of the ball this offseason.
While he may be on the outside looking in, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Woods stick around -- especially given his familiarity with Staley, the coach who originally drafted him. Staley has brought in other former players he knows well like safety , plus defensive linemen and Chris Rumph II.
