Lothar MatthÀus has publicly backed Nico Schlotterbeck following the backlash surrounding his recent contract extension with Borussia Dortmund, pushing back against criticism over a reported release clause tied to the deal.
Schlotterbeck recently committed his future to Dortmund until 2031, a move that would typically be celebrated. However, the reaction among sections of the fanbase has been mixed, largely due to reports in German media suggesting the presence of a âŹ60 million release clause that could facilitate a summer departure.
Some supporters voiced their frustration over the weekend, even directing boos at the defender. MatthÀus, speaking on Sky90, made it clear he sees the controversy as overblown.
âI donât understand the debate at all,â MatthĂ€us said, emphasizing that itâs natural for players to maintain flexibilityâespecially when elite clubs are involved. With Real Madrid reportedly interested, he argued that itâs only logical for Schlotterbeck to leave the door open for a potential future move.
MatthÀus rejected the idea that such a clause signals a lack of commitment to Dortmund. In his view, Schlotterbeck can remain fully dedicated to the club while still preserving the option to take the next step in his career if the right opportunity arises.
âThis doesnât mean he doesnât identify with Dortmund,â MatthĂ€us explained. âItâs completely normal in todayâs game.â
From Dortmundâs perspective, MatthĂ€us also sees the renewal as a positive outcome. By extending Schlotterbeckâs contract, the club strengthens its position financially. Even if the player were to leave via a clause, the fee would still represent significant valueâespecially compared to the risk of losing him for less, or even for free, down the line.
Interestingly, MatthĂ€us hinted that the release clause may not have originated from the playerâs camp. According to him, the inclusion of such a provision was likely driven internally by the club as a way to secure Schlotterbeckâs signature amid uncertainty over his long-term future.
