SEC dominates NCAA softball tournament bracket with 6 of top 8 seeds

When the 64-team field for the NCAA Division I softball tournament bracket was unveiled on Sunday night, the Southeastern Conference claimed six out of the top eight national seeds. The list was headlined by No. 1 Alabama and defending national champion Texas at No. 2. In total, the league placed 12 SEC programs into the tournament, reinforcing what the selection committee essentially confirmed: The SEC is currently the sport’s dominant driving force.

Regional play begins on Friday, with all top 16 seeds hosting. Winners will advance to the super regionals the following week, with the ultimate eight-team field heading to the Women's College World Series starting May 28 at Devon Park in Oklahoma City.

• No. 1 Alabama (49–7) enters as the overall top seed, but the path won't be easy. Belmont ace Maya Johnson, who leads the nation with a 0.66 ERA, could be waiting in regional play for Alabama. It's a matchup that feels more like a playoff.
• No. 2 Texas (42–10) is riding in on the momentum from last year. Returning pitcher Teagan Kavan, last year’s Women’s College World Series Most Outstanding Player, anchors a roster that just took down Alabama in the SEC title game.
• No. 3 Oklahoma (48–8) lands at No. 3 despite an early SEC Tournament stumble. With four national titles in five years and eight championships under coach Patty Gasso, it's not a résumé for the Sooners, it's more of a structural advantage.
• No. 4 Nebraska (46–6) continues its rise after a Big Ten Tournament win over UCLA. That win was powered by Jordy Bahl, whose path from Oklahoma championship contributor to Nebraska centerpiece adds one of the sport’s most compelling story arcs.
