âShocking decisionâ: Carrick blasts Martinez red card as âone of the worst everâ in Man Unitedâs loss to Leeds
Michael Carrick called the decision to send off Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez against Leeds 'one of the worst' he's ever seen.
A bad night for Manchester United got worse when Martinez was dismissed for pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin's hair at Old Trafford. VAR deemed the action to be violent conduct, with the Argentine receiving a red card.
United were 2-0 down at the time of the red card, following Noah Okofor's first-half double for Leeds. Casemiro headed home a reply for the Red Devils, but Leeds held on to claim a precious three points in their fight againstPremier League relegation.
Carrick was fuming at the decision to send Martinez off, insisting their was minimal contact between the centre-back and England forward.
"That decision was one of the worst I've ever seen,"Carrick fumed.
"He [Calvert-Lewin] can throw his arms in Licha's [Martinez's] face - and then he's sent off. Shocking.
"I don't even know what it looks like. It's not a pull, it's not a tug, it's not aggressive. He touches it and he gets sent off.
"Worse of all, he gets sent to overturn it, a clear and obvious error. Shocking. He is off balance and grappling.
"We have got to be careful where the game is going. It is a shocking decision, absolutely shocking."
Reflecting on the incident, Leeds striker Calvert-Lewin admitted he had sympathy for Martinez but insisted he felt his hair pulled.
"I don't know, I don't make the rules. I felt my hair get pulled, told the ref, he makes the decisions. Unfortunate for [Martinez], whether he's meant it or not. I hold no grudges."
Martinez will now be banned for Manchester United's crucial clash against Champions League rivals Chelsea next weekend.
Harry Maguire could also be absent as the defender awaits to discover whether he will be suspended. Maguire missed the defeat to Leeds after a red card at Bournemouth and could still be handed another game suspension.
