MLB.com’s voting panel ranked Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani as No. 1 in their starting pitcher power rankings.
Ohtani previously ranked seventh in the rankings, and moved up six spots following Tarik Skubal’s move to the injured list with loose bodies in their elbow.
“Ohtani might have a pedestrian (for him) .814 OPS at the plate, but on the mound? He’s never been better,” MLB.com’s Andrew Simon wrote. “Through six starts, he sports an MLB-low 0.97 ERA, having yet to allow more than two earned runs or five hits in any outing.
“Opponents are batting .160 with a .489 OPS against Ohtani, who could make a charge at the Cy Young Award, one of the few achievements to elude his grasp so far. The only strange thing about Ohtani’s season? The Dodgers are just 2-4 in his outings, scoring a total of five runs in the losses, including Tuesday’s at Houston.”
Shohei Ohtani was ranked as the best pitcher due to his impressive performance, including an MLB-low 0.97 ERA through six starts.
Shohei Ohtani currently has an ERA of 0.97 in the 2026 MLB season.
Tarik Skubal's move to the injured list allowed Ohtani to move up six spots in the starting pitcher power rankings.
Ohtani has a .814 OPS at the plate this season, which is considered pedestrian for him.

Ohtani has pitched in seven of his nine MLB seasons, but has never posted numbers like this.
His 0.97 ERA leads MLB, and has lasted six innings or longer in each of his six starts this year. His career-high for ERA in a single season came in 2022, when he placed fourth in Cy Young voting with a 2.33 ERA through 166 innings pitched.
Ohtani struck batters out at a higher clip in 2022—fanning 33.4% of his opponents—but still has a respectable 29% rate this season, which is good enough to rank in the top 13% of MLB pitchers.
MLB’s only two-way player has also secured some new silverware in the 2026 season, earning his first Pitcher of the Month award for his efforts in April. Ohtani’s brilliant start to the season has put him firmly in the running for bigger awards as well.
FanGraphs currently ranks Ohtani third in terms of Cy Young points, their formula for projecting who will win the Cy Young in each league. His mark of 20.7 (calculated with the following formula: IP/2 – ER + SO/10 + W) falls just short of Chris Sale’s total of 21.9 and Bryce Elder’s 21.0.
They also adjust Cy Young points for FIP, and Ohtani ranks second in that regard to Philadelphia Phillies ace Cristopher Sánchez.
Ohtani is right in the middle of the race for his first Cy Young award, and if he continues to produce on the mound as he has through his first six starts, he could very well take the elusive accolade home with him.
