When the Boston Celtics clinched their 12th consecutive playoff berth, everything seemed normal. But on April 9, Joel Embiid’s appendicitis surgery cooled the Philadelphia 76ers’ hopes. The series began with the Celtics crushing the 76ers 123–91 in Game 1, and by Game 4, Boston was up 3–1. Yet Embiid’s return and Jayson Tatum’s calf injury in Game 6 became the turning point that shifted momentum to Philadelphia.
The 76ers made history by coming back from a 3–1 deficit, defeating the Celtics 109–100 in Game 7. But the real drama unfolded off the court when Jaylen Brown accused referees of having an “agenda” and called Embiid the “king of flopping.”
“Embiid put a lot of pressure on us,” . “We didn't really have an answer for him. We tried a bunch of different things. He's a big body. He also was flopping around. He got some extra calls and they rewarded him for that, but that's the league we're in.”

Brown was whistled for 10 offensive fouls in the series - double that of any other player - while Embiid converted 9-of-11 free throws in Game 7 alone. In the final minutes, Embiid dominated with 34 points and 12 rebounds, while Brown, despite scoring 33, struggled against the refs’ whistles.
This was the 24th playoff series between the 76ers and Celtics - the most in NBA history. And for the first time since 1982, Philly beat Boston in a Game 7 on their home court.
The controversy deepened when Brown went on Twitch, claiming referees “targeted” him because he had criticized officiating during the regular season.
“Why are you targeting me? They clearly had an agenda,” he said. “Maybe because I spoke, I was critical of the refs in the regular season. So you know how they responded? 'We're gonna call every — you're gonna lead the playoffs in offensive fouls.' That was the response from the officiating crew.
“You could clearly tell,” he continued. “I've actually spoken to some refs and they said it was an agenda going into each game. 'Any time Jaylen brings his arm up, just from reputation, just call it.' “
Brown’s frustration isn’t new. Back in May 2023’s Game 7, referee Scott Foster gave him a technical foul after a minor exchange with Georges Niang. Brown said Foster imposed the tech without understanding the situation:
“... And here comes Scott Foster. Right away before even deciphering the situation just gives me a tech,” said Brown. “I definitely didn't want to get a tech in that situation.”
All of this raises the question: are referees making calls based on reputation rather than the game itself?
