IRVING — Kate Buesing said on Friday that playing in all-or-nothing playoff games is fun. Lately the Hebron senior is getting pretty good at mixing fun with fine pitching performances.
Buesing threw a one-hitter while Lilly Pirrello and Liz Cardona led a regrouping at the plate in Hebron’s 6-0 win over South Grand Prairie in the third and deciding game of a Class 6A Division I area-round playoff series at the Irving High School softball field. Buesing was masterful in changing speeds and accuracy, leading to seven strikeouts with just one walk.
SGP’s lone hit was a Katherine Gonzalez single to left in the bottom of the third. Buesing rebounded from a 4-1 loss in Game 2 on Thursday in which she allowed eight hits. Buesing (20-6) also threw a one-hitter in a Game 3 win over Allen in the bi-district round last Saturday.
“I was mixing my fast stuff and change-up just to throw them off-balance. I just think I was more dialed in and more focused than last night,” said Buesing, a Southern Nazarene signee. “It’s actually a lot of fun going out there and being under a lot of pressure. Showing I can handle the pressure makes it an even better win.”
Hebron (25-11), ranked No. 7 in The Dallas Morning News’ Class 6A area poll and No. 22 in the TGCA 6A state poll, advances to the region-semifinal round to face either Keller Timber Creek or Odessa, which conclude their area series Saturday in San Angelo. South Grand Prairie (23-10) was eliminated in the area round for the seventh time since 2017.
After SGP ace Jernie Nerio threw a no-hitter against Hebron in Game 2, Hebron rebounded for 12 hits Friday. Pirrello had three hits, including a triple to right-center in the sixth, while Cardona was 2 for 2 with a double and two RBIs.

“We worked on faster pitches and going inside and outside. We worked longer in the cages before the game longer than what we did before,” Pirrello said. “It was also more of a mindset. We did a better job physically, but this whole game is a mental game. We did a good job staying focused.”
Nerio (15-5), took the loss, striking out eight while allowing five earned runs and one walk. A Weatherford College signee, Nerio struck out 31 batters in the series and had over 800 in her career.

With Socorro leading 5-3 and one strike away from winning, Keller’s Tinslee Cribbs hit an RBI single on an 0-2 count to make it 5-4 and keep the game alive. That came after Avery Lawton walked with two outs to load the bases, the third walk of the inning.

Odessa 6, Keller Timber Creek 2: Tatyana Deliz hit two home runs and drove in six runs as Odessa won Game 1 of a best-of-3 series.
