One of the best things about being a prominent head coach is the ability to construct your roster as you wish. For some, this means bringing on recruits who are legacy members of the program, sons of former great players. In other cases, it means bringing on your own son, whether he's a prominent player or someone further down the roster.
For Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day, things didn't go quite this way over the weekend. On Sunday morning, it was announced that Day's son, RJ Day, was committing to the Northwestern Wildcats, a Big Ten opponent for the Buckeyes.
Day is a 3-star quarterback prospect in the 2027 class, standing at 5-foot-11, 203 pounds, and is rated by the 247Sports Composite as the No. 1,361 overall player, and No. 86 QB in the class. Of course, it's fair to believe that Day might have a hard time competing for playing time at Ohio State, with the class of talent that they bring in each year, but seeing him go to another team in the conference is noteworthy.
Northwestern might be a great home for Day, though. This offseason, they hired former Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly as the new OC, someone with whom Day has a long history both as a player and a coach. Both Kelly and Day coached together in Columbus when the Buckeyes won the national championship in 2024. It's easy to believe that if Ryan couldn't have his son with him in Columbus, then he's happy to have him learning under someone like Kelly, who he obviously trusts.
