BRIDGEWATER – St. Joseph maintained its elite standing as New Jersey’s No. 1 boys golf team, and its star sophomore, Rory Asselta, continues as the state’s premier player.
The Green Knights repeated as the overall Tournament of Champions titlist, edging South Jersey power Mainland by two strokes on May 11 at Raritan Valley Country Club.
“Certainly, a different way to go about it than last season,” St. Joseph coach Kevin Rooney, referring to last season’s runaway win, “but this was the goal for the boys, and mission accomplished.”

Asselta repeated as individual champ with a birdie on the first playoff hole after he and Cherry Hill East junior Tyler Whitney played their 18 holes at 3-under-par 69.
“It was closer than last year, but the team got it done, and same thing with me,” said Asselta, who won last year’s title with a record-setting score. “I got the win, not as good as last year, but I still got it done.”
Here’s a breakdown of the NJSIAA's five group team and individual champions:
St. Joseph carded a shoot-four, count-four score of 299, one season after coasting to a 15-stroke margin over Delbarton with 286 at Raritan Valley. Delbarton was again runner-up, with 306.
In addition to Asselta’s 69, his brother, Michael, a senior, shot 70 and was fourth overall in the TOC. Junior Carl Antifonario shot 78 and sophomore Justin Peck had 82.
"Sometimes people only get a chance to do this once, and we were lucky enough to do it twice," Michael Asselta said. "So we didn't let that moment slip away."
With the elder Asselta the only Green Knight graduating, the team will be formidable against next season.
“Three of these guys will be back,” said Rooney, whose team recently won North Non-Public sectional and Bergen County titles, “and hopefully we’ll continue to perform well.”
