Just last week, USA Today published a story breaking down the top high schools for athletes in the state of Maryland. And a local high school on the Eastern Shore made the list of 25 schools.
Based on a study conducted by Niche, which took into account feedback from students and parents, number of sports offered, number of state championships, student participation, and more, Stephen Decatur landed not just in the Top 25 of Maryland high schools for athletes, but made it all the way into the Top 10, ultimately being slotted at No. 9.
Stephen Decatur's clinched the Class 2A State Championship on Dec. 7, 2024 with a 13-12 win over Huntingtown.
In terms of state championships, Stephen Decatur recently saw its high school football team win back-to-back MPSSAA state titles in 2023 and 2024, its wrestling team won five straight dual meet state titles from 2019 to 2024, its boys soccer team won a state title in 2025, and its softball team and boys lacrosse teams were both state finalists in 2025.
Fellow Bayside Conference school Kent Island was also featured on the list, landing at No. 8.
