Tonie Morgan's dream has been realized.
From the court at Florida High's Bob Albertson gym to Georgia Tech and Kentucky, Morgan's basketball journey finds its next stop in the WNBA.
The Tallahassee native was selected by the Chicago Sky with the 32nd overall pick in the third round of the WNBA Draft on Monday, April 13. When Morgan's name flashed on screen at her local draft party, the future Sky guard was showered in celebration from friends, old coaches, and family members.
"I was excited, I'm glad everyone was here to support me, and they are all happy for me," Morgan said of the celebration at her draft party. "I've got an amazing village behind me."
Morgan averaged 13.8 points,Ā 7.94 assists, the second-highest average in the country and a program record, and 3.1 rebounds per game as a senior at Kentucky, and she totaled 1,756 points in her collegiate career, adding 754 assists and 654 rebounds.
She set the single-season assist record for the Wildcats in her lone season in Lexington, posting a total of 286 assists in her 36 games played. She was a key figure for a team that ranked as high as No. 6 in the country and went 25-11 and earned a fifth seed in the NCAA tournament.
Now set to join the Sky, Morgan said she's ready to compete and be a playmaker in the Windy City.
"I'm super excited, I can't wait for the next part of this journey," Morgan said. "Just taking it one day at a time, I still got to take it day-by-day, I still have to graduate. Then just focus on training camp and make my impact noticeable."
She joins UCLA's Gabriela Jaquez and Ole Miss's Latasha Lattimore in being selected to Chicago. The rookies will report to WNBA training camp on Sunday, April 19, with preseason games set to start on April 25.
Under the league's new collective bargaining agreement, teams can carry 12 players on a roster while having two slots for "developmental players." Morgan will compete in training camp to make the Sky's roster, and she offers Chicago a versatile skillset.
She will depart for Chicago later this week for training camp and write the next chapter in her basketball journey, which started on the courts in Tallahassee.
"This is a unique story, and I'm glad it's mine," Morgan said. "I can't wait to take my talents to Chicago."
