Texas A&M coach Mike Elko is entering the second part of the offseason after the spring season concluded post the annual Maroon & White Game on April 18, showcasing the 17 transfer portal additions and 25 of 26 signees in the 2026 recruiting class.
Now completely focused on the 2027 recruiting class, the 2028 cycle will be a secondary focus for the Aggies, given that they have offered the son of a former Texas A&M standout running back. On Monday, 2028, four-star RB Ian Thomas, whose father, former Texas A&M star back Rodney Thomas, was a First-Team All-SWC in 1993 and 1994, has passed down his elite traits to the incoming Tomball (TX) junior.
One of the more complete running back prospects in the cycle, Thomas possesses the speed, vision, and, most importantly, the footwork and balance to average over 7.5 yards per carry during his 2025 sophomore season, and produced 1,528 yards and 20 touchdowns on the ground, paired with 212 receiving yards and two scores.
Already receiving SEC offers from Kentucky and the Texas Longhorns on Monday, Texas A&M likely holds the early edge given Thomas's legacy status, while Mike Elko's status as one of the top coaches in the country after the Aggies made the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history during his second season at the helm.
According to 247Sports, Thomas is currently positioned as the 39th-ranked prospect in the 2028 class, the No. 1-ranked running back, and the 5th-ranked prospect in Texas.
