Arch Manning loves playing basketball. The Texas Longhorns quarterback played basketball in high school and even got special permission from UT basketball coach Sean Miller to use their court. So Manning must be loving having Cam Coleman on the team. Not only will he provide a target come fall, he's a hoops buddy right now.
A two-sports athlete in high school, Manning played three years of varsity basketball at Isidore Newman in New Orleans. He also was a four-year starting quarterback for the football team.
On the court, he was a 6-foot-4 forward who averaged 2.7 points and 2.8 rebounds in 25 games off the bench as a junior in 2021-22, his final season of high school ball. Ironically, Isidore Newman won the Division III boys basketball state championship while Manning was there, but not football.
When Miller took over the basketball program on the Forty Acres, Manning asked Miller for a special favor.
"I was walking across the street last week and somebody yelled my name: 'Coach Miller! Coach Miller!' I turned around, and it was Arch Manning," Miller told Jeff Goodman on The Field of 68. "He's a huge basketball fan. We came together, and he said, 'Welcome to Texas. I'm a big basketball fan.' He was with a couple of his friends. He said, 'Hey, do you mind if we sneak in and play pickup once in a while?' That was his question for me, and I said, 'Anytime, anytime. Whatever you do, don't get hurt.' I'm really excited about watching SEC football live at Texas. There's a lot of excitement here at Texas for the next six months."
Coleman was also a two-sport athlete at Phenix City Central High School in Alabama. He played power forward and was probably better than Manning was.
The duo have apparently been playing their shared "second sport" together. Manning shared a video of a Coleman dunk with the caption, "light work." One thing seems certain, the two are bonding well.
