Deandre Ayton had six rebounds to his name, but as the primary rebounder for the Lakers, he should have more. Considering rebounding involves plenty of effort, Ayton has been caught being lackadaisical with his effort on the boards.
For a long time, Ayton has been a puzzling player. During his early years with the Phoenix Suns, he was superb. He and the made it to the 2021 Finals, and he was a big part of their success.

Unfortunately, Ayton's issues started popping up, including being a bit lazy. During his time with the Portland Trail Blazers, this was apparent, as most of his teammates were outworking him, and his motor was at a lesser level than most players.
Now that he is with the Lakers, Ayton has been a confusing player again. Many people have called him out for his lack of effort at times, but it was most apparent during Game 3 of the Western Conference Semifinals against the Thunder.
It got to a point when, in one possession, the Thunder grabbed multiple offensive rebounds. That was enough for Redick to talk to his assistant coaches and say that he cannot play Ayton.
That is a bad sign for Ayton's time with the Lakers. He might have one more year in his contract for the 2026-27 season, but Redick will surely want another center who will be much better than Ayton.
