The NFCA Northeast All-Region Teams were announced on Thursday, with three Rutgers softball players named to the lists. Junior second baseman Sam Rohwer was a second-team selection, while sophomore first baseman Baileigh Burtis and freshman catcher Charleigh Schuettler earned third-team honors.
In addition to receiving all-region honors, Rohwer was named to the all-Big Ten first team for her stellar performance this season. In total, she batted .356, with an incredible average of .413 in conference play. She led the team in home runs with 17 and was tied for first on the team in doubles with 11. Her 58 total hits this season culminated in 6 lead-off home runs, 16 multiple-hit games, and 10 multiple-RBI contests. She collected 41 runs and was second on the team with 46 RBIs.
At second base, Rohwer made 90 putouts, along with 88 assists.
Rohwer’s 17 home runs this season rank fourth in program history.
Burtis, a sophomore, swung .344 on the season and .351 in Big Ten action. Over the course of her second season with Rutgers, Burtis accumulated 53 hits, 35 runs, a team-high tying 11 doubles, six home runs, and 41 RBI’s. At first base, she totaled 289 putouts and seven assists.
Schuettler made 41 starts behind the plate for the Knights in her rookie season, where she registered four double plays, 22 assists, and caught eight attempting to steal bases. On offense, she batted .348, recording 24 hits, 23 runs, four doubles, two home runs, and 12 RBIs.
The trio played a pivotal role in Rutgers having one of its most explosive offenses in program history, as they set school records in both home runs with 74, and RBI’s with 320, while having the team’s highest batting average in over a decade with .306. Despite the underwhelming .500 record and ugly 6-18 record in conference play, the team has shown significant progress with these three leading the way, as they earned 7 more wins than last year and doubled the amount of conference wins that they had as well. Rutgers will hope to get all three back for another year to continue their development.
The players are Sam Rohwer, who received a second-team selection, and Baileigh Burtis and Charleigh Schuettler, who were named to the third team.
Sam Rohwer batted .356 overall, with a .413 average in conference play, leading the team with 17 home runs and 46 RBIs.
In addition to her NFCA All-Region selection, Sam Rohwer was named to the all-Big Ten first team.
