The Miami Grand Prix is at risk of cancellation due to severe thunderstorms and rain forecasted for race day. Current predictions show a 99% chance of rain and a 59% chance of thunderstorms.
Sunday’s Miami Grand Prix faces a threat of cancellation due to thunderstorms and rain, according to the weather forecast on Saturday.
A wet race will take place according to the schedule, but F1’s governing body, the FIA, could step in to pause or cancel the race if visibility drops below permissible levels.
MotorBiscuit reported the Miami GP weather forecast a few days ago, suggesting a 37% chance of rain and 100% cloud cover. Now, according to AccuWeather, there is a 99% chance of rain on race day, and a 59% chance of thunderstorms.
Rain is expected to last four hours throughout Sunday. The maximum temperature is expected to reach a high of 26°C. The weather report emphasized that “rain and thunderstorms could impact the race.”
With the race scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. local time, the forecast for the afternoon suggests an 88% chance of rain and 99% cloud cover, with wind gusts of up to 26 km/h.
Even if the race is allowed to carry on in rainy conditions following a safety check by the FIA, Florida’s 30-Minute Rule could halt the race. The rule requires any sporting event to halt immediately when thunder is heard at the venue.
The event is not allowed to resume until 30 minutes have passed after the last clap of thunder or visible lightning strike. The rule could potentially delay a race restart.
Grands prix usually last around two hours, and given the 7:52 p.m. sunset time in Miami, it could prove to be a race against time before visibility drops to dangerous levels, in case of a race pause due to thunderstorms.
Not to mention potential incidents that could arise due to a wet race, which would require the safety car to be brought out, as they would only add to the delay.
According to a report by ESPN, the FIA is expected to issue an update on race timings this afternoon after officials have assessed the weather situation for race day.
The forecast predicts a 99% chance of rain and a 59% chance of thunderstorms on race day.
The FIA could cancel the race if visibility drops below permissible levels due to rain and thunderstorms.
Rain is expected to last for four hours throughout Sunday.
