The Detroit Tigers are 17-17, and just one game back of the Cleveland Guardians for the top spot in the American League Central.
While it's a weaker division, the Tigers, despite some tough injuries and inconsistent play, are in lock-step for the top spot in the division thanks to their superstar rookie Kevin McGonigle.
USA Today's Bob Nightengale called McGonigle the best rookie in baseball this season despite some strong competition for Munetaka Murakami, Sal Stewart, and plenty of others.
"Best Rookie: Kevin McGonigle, Detroit Tigers," Nightengale writes. "It has been the year of the rookie... But no one has shined more than McGonigle."
While Stewart, Murakami, , , Konnor Griffin, and JJ Wetherholt, among many others, have played great, Nightengale believes McGonigle has been the best.

So far this season, the Tigers' rookie infielder has put up 2.0 bWAR, which is tied for the most in the American League. Across 33 games and 146 plate appearances, he's put up some truly elite offensive numbers.
McGonigle has 39 hits, 23 runs scored, 11 doubles, two triples (most in AL), two homers, 14 RBIs, three stolen bases, 19 walks, 19 strikeouts, a .310 batting average, and an .880 OPS.
It's just his rookie season, and the 21-year-old has already shown up in clutch moments, is a well-rounded player, and has even flashed some leather in the infield at times.
There have been some truly elite performances from rookies this season, but Nightengale believes that McGonigle has been the best so far in 2026 through April.
