But lefty Framber Valdez was struggling to throw strikes. He walked five in his 4.1 innings and he finally paid for it in the fifth. He walked Dane Myers and fell behind Matt McLain 3-1 before serving up a long, two-run homer to center.

The Tigers missed glorious scoring chances in the fifth, two on and no out, and the sixth, bases loaded and no out. In each inning, a double-play ball killed the rally.
The Reds cut the lead to two in the sixth on a solo home run by Nathaniel Lowe. It was the first run allowed by reliever Kyle Finnegan this season.
