While Tim David has never explicitly revealed his dislike for his former franchise MI in an open platform, this is not the first time he has reacted in such a manner while playing against the five-time champions.
In the IPL 2025 season, when he joined RCB from MI, David reacted aggressively after RCB had defeated the Mumbai franchise in a crucial game.
David was part of the Mumbai Indians setup for a couple of years before returning to RCB in 2025. In 2022, MI acquired him for INR 8.5 crore as he was seen as one of the most destructive lower-order batters in the format and was even touted as the successor to Kieron Pollard.
However, his time in Mumbai did not always go as either party had hoped, and he was not retained before the 2025 mega auction. His eventual departure made his appearance on the other side of this particular fixture all the more loaded.
Watching the franchise that once held his IPL future get knocked out of the tournament, while wearing a rival jersey, clearly brought something out of him this Sunday.
Whether David's gesture was directed at the franchise, a specific individual, or was simply a moment of raw emotion after a high-pressure game, only he knows.
What it does reveal is that professional sport carries personal histories that rarely disappear when the jersey changes. Not everyone leaves their old club on the warmest of terms, and sometimes, that shows.
