The Tennessee Titans are facing ridicule after introducing a new drill during rookie minicamp. A video of wide receiver Tyren Montgomery navigating the obstacle course-like drill sparked laughter across the NFL community.
The Tennessee Titans and many other teams are back in action following the 2026 NFL Draft.
That’s because rookie minicamps are kicking off this week, giving fans and media a chance to see the league’s newest rookies in action.
Of course, there aren’t any intense practices going on at rookie minicamps and instead it’s more light work, with players working on fundamentals while doing some drills.
The Titans’ rookie minicamp was the subject of conversation on Friday, though, and for all the wrong reasons.
A video shared by team writer Jim Wyatt showed Titans undrafted free-agent signing and wide receiver Tyren Montgomery going through an obstacle course-like drill.
It was basically as if a football practice had thrown up all of its equipment and the Titans said, “Here, get through this.”
It’s hard to say we’ve seen a first in the NFL in this day and age, but the Titans might have accomplished that.
The reactions to Tennessee’s obstacle course were as funny as you’d expect.
“Titans steal this drill from the Westminster Dog Show?” The Athletic’s Dan Duggan asked.
“Man what is this,” CBS Sports’ JP Acosta wondered.
Some had a more analytical response.
“This drill is clearly working a classic skill acquisition principle: muscle confusion,” one X user wrote.
“NFL teams should hire a separate coaching staff just for drills. Or have the S&C staff set them up,” athletic development specialist suggested. “NFL coaches are great at scheme, film breakdown, and teaching technique. Their drills, though, are awful.”

Fans are laughing due to the unusual nature of the drill showcased in a video, which has drawn widespread attention and ridicule.

“It’s time for NFL staffs to hire skill coaches to set up drills & help players improve/acq skill,” football coach Ross Cooper said. “They are great at tech and scheme, S&C handles the weight room and conditioning, but there is a real void when we see this at every practice. This is time improvement could happen.”
The 2026 campaign will be a big one for the Titans.
Tennessee has a franchise quarterback hopeful in 2025 No. 1 overall pick, Cam Ward, who is looking to take a step forward this coming season after a tough rookie campaign.
The Titans are also in the first year of head coach Robert Saleh, who took over following the disastrous Brian Callahan tenure.
Adding to all that, Tennessee is slated to open up a new stadium in 2027 and having a competitive team playing in it is obviously massively important.
It’s pretty clear Tennessee is aware of just how important this coming campaign is.
The Titans went out and spent a boatload of money on free agents to beef up both sides of the ball, and especially the defense.
Then, Tennessee went ahead and added more talent to the offense by drafting wide receiver Carnell Tate in Round 1, and then edge rusher Kendric Faulk and linebacker Anthony Hill in Rounds 1 and 2.
But we’ve seen this story before and not work out.
We need not look further than 2024, when the Titans were also aggressive before falling flat on their face.
Saleh and the 2026 Titans will look to avoid that same fate.
