Each year on April 15, MLB celebrates Robinson's legacy by having all players wear No. 42 on the same day the Hall of Famer first stepped on the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Robinson went on to go 0-for-3 but scored the deciding run in a 5-3 victory over the Boston Braves at Ebbets Field. He went on to lead the Dodgers to their first World Series in 1955 before being elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962.

Robinson's No. 42 was retired throughout MLB on April 15,1997 on the 50th anniversary of his debut. It marked the first time in any major American sport that a professional athlete's number was retired universally throughout a league.
After 42 was retired in 1997, players who were wearing the number at the time could choose to continue wearing it until they retired.
Robinson's number was retired by the Dodgers in June 4, 1972. He spent his entire 11-year MLB career with the Dodgers, retiring in 1956 before the club moved to Los Angeles in 1958.
The last MLB player to wear No. 42 was New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, who wore the number for his entire 19-career before retiring in 2013. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2019.
