It's somewhat tough to get a feel for what the Boston Red Sox did with Alex Cora. I don't want to say that they made the right or wrong decision, as we need a year or so to play out before we can really give a take on that.
If the Red Sox go on a run over the next few months, nobody is going to view their decision to move on from Cora as a bad one.
Right now, there are a lot of emotional takes, with a lot of insiders and players around the league, including coaches as well, who want to stick up for Cora.
The latest to do so was top insider Ken Rosenthal, who suggested that the Red Sox are an organization in dysfunction right now, scapegoating a manager who didn't get a fair chance.
“They are the league leader in dysfunction, in overreaction, and in scapegoating,” Rosenthal said, per Newsweek. “Remember the date of these changes was April 25. That’s remarkably early. The Red Sox at the time were 10-17, yes they’d been struggling, but this move shocked the entire industry. It shocked the entire industry not just because of the timing, of course, but because of who Alex Cora is in the game. He’s one of the more respected managers in the game and it shocked people because they thought he was pretty safe.”
There's a lot to take away from Rosenthal's comments, and in a way, he's not wrong. This felt very reactionary, though it's Boston at the end of the day, and things like this are going to happen when a franchise of that nature doesn't play at the level it is expected to at any given moment.
The Boston Red Sox moved on from Alex Cora amid a backdrop of organizational dysfunction, but the specific reasons for his departure remain unclear.
