KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Grace Christian Academy entered the high school baseball postseason with its best record in more than a decade and as a favorite to win a DII A state title.
The Rams, 30-4, entered regionals on a 21-game win streak and ranked No. 1 in Class DII A. The Rams’ last 30-win season came in 2015, when they won their first and only state championship.
Grace Christian has reached the state tournament four times since then, including last season. This year, however, the Rams believe they are well-positioned to bring home a second title.
“We had a lot of success last year and made a long run,” head coach Brent Walsh said. “We had a lot of young kids, and you have to learn how not to lose and figure out how to win. Now we expect to win. We definitely built some confidence from last year and that experience. I think the guys just expect to win every time we’re out here.”
However, that confidence will be tested.
Boyd Buchanan rallied late Monday evening, scoring six unanswered runs to snap Grace Christian’s 21-game win streak. The Rams now face elimination as they hope to advance to Sectionals.
The Rams next regional matchup is scheduled for Tuesday, May 5.
