The Premier League has clarified why Tottenham Hotspur were denied a late penalty against Leeds United. Spurs were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw in Monday's game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, leaving them just two points above West Ham United in the relegation zone.
The home side did, however, have a strong penalty shout deep into added time when James Maddison went down under a challenge from Lukas Nmecha. Referee Jarred Gillett dismissed the appeals, though a VAR review did follow.
Ultimately, however, the original decision stood. Providing clarification via their Match Centre X account, the Premier League stated: "The referee's call of no penalty to Tottenham Hotspur was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed that Nmecha played the ball."

While the review was ongoing, Sky Sports co-commentator Alan Smith had already picked up on the Leeds player's touch on the ball, as per football.london.
"VAR will certainly get involved here!" He said. "He certainly catches Maddison. Does he get a touch on the ball? He might get the slightest - which could save him!"
Following a cautious opening 45 minutes, things appeared to be falling into place for Spurs when Mathys Tel broke the deadlock early in the second half, slotting past Karl Darlow. Ironically, though, Tel would play a central role in the equalizer.
The Tottenham forward attempted to clear the ball inside his own penalty area but caught Ethan Ampadu, with a VAR review confirming the penalty kick. Dominic Calvert-Lewin then made no mistake from the spot, leaving Antonin Kinsky with no chance.

When announcing the decision, referee Gillett said: "After review, Tottenham No.11 commits a foul on the Leeds attacker. The final decision is a penalty kick."
A huge 13 minutes of added time handed both sides the opportunity to chase a vital victory. Spurs had Kinsky to thank for denying Sean Longstaff with a superb instinctive stop, before a penalty appeal emerged for Tottenham deep into stoppage time.
Maddison's appearance marked his first minutes back on the pitch following a lengthy knee injury layoff. The midfielder could prove instrumental in the club's remaining two games of the season.
