The Oregon sophomore set seven personal bests across 10 events and finished fifth in a loaded field in Azusa.
Aiden Carter put together the best decathlon of his career this week at the Bryan Clay Multis, finishing fifth in the top section with a lifetime-best 7,497 points after two strong days of competition in Azusa, California.
The Oregon sophomore opened the meet with a breakthrough Thursday, piling up 4,101 points to sit fourth overall and third among collegians after the first five events. Carter delivered four outright personal bests on day one, running 10.83 in the 100 meters, jumping 7.53m (24-8.5) in the long jump, throwing 13.14m (43-1.5) in the shot put and clocking 49.76 in the 400 meters. He also cleared an outdoor-best 1.95m (6-4.75) in the high jump.
The performance marked several milestones at once. It was Carter’s first time breaking 11 seconds in the 100, first time under 50 seconds in the 400 and first time topping 13 meters in the shot put. After day one, he trailed only BYU’s Ben Barton, Northern Iowa’s Carter Morton and unattached competitor Callum Newby.
Carter carried that momentum into Friday and continued stacking PRs. He opened the second day by lowering his best in the 110-meter hurdles to 14.03, improving on the 14.23 he ran earlier this season at the Jim Bush Legends meet. He added a discus throw of 33.38m (109-6), cleared 4.70m (15-5) in the pole vault to match his outdoor best, threw 47.28m (155-1) in the javelin and finished the 1,500 meters in 5:05.85.
By the end of the meet, Carter had set personal bests in seven of the decathlon’s 10 events and crushed his previous top score of 7,235, which also came at Bryan Clay last season.
