Trio of Home Runs Lead Seattle Mariners to 5-2 Win Against Texas Rangers
SEATTLE — A trio of home runs and a seven-inning quality start from starting pitcher Bryan Woo lifted the Seattle Mariners to a 5-2 win against the Texas Rangers on Sunday at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
The Mariners (10-13) earned their second consecutive home series win with the victory and reached a double-digit win total in the process.
"I thought our guys did a really nice job of hunting pitches in the zone," Seattle manager Dan Wilson said in a postgame interview Sunday. "I think (Texas starting pitcher MacKenzie Gore) has a tendency to go out of the zone a little bit. But our guys did a really nice job of getting him in the zone and when he did, they were able to put a good swing on it and find barrels."
One of the barrels found against Gore was from Mariners right fielder Rob Refsnyder on the first pitch of the game.
The veteran slugger, who was slotted in the lead-off spot Sunday, ambushed the first pitch he saw from Gore for a solo shot in the bottom of the first. It was his first hit and first homer with Seattle and the first lead-off home run of his 12-season career.
Refsnyder was 0-for-18 in nine games this year entering Sunday.
"I feel like, as an older guy, you try to preach having a routine and don't worry about the results," Refsnyder said after the game. "But sometimes when it's happening to you it's hard to think like that. Keeps a good perspective on how long the year is and the ups-and-downs of the season. ... There's been some fans during early batting practice, even today in the outfield, that have been really supportive. That helps, honestly. I'm human, we hear a lot of things. Just to have the fan support meant a lot. It was pretty cool."
Refsnyder's solo shot was bolstered by a solid first inning from Seattle starting pitcher Bryan Woo that helped set the tone for the afternoon.

Woo, after allowing a lead-off single to Rangers right fielder Brandon Nimmo, locked in and induced a foulout from shortstop Corey Seager. During the at-bat against Seager, catcher Mitch Garver successfully challenged a ball call that would have resulted in a 3-0 count.
With Nimmo at first and one out, Woo got Texas left fielder Wyatt Langford to ground into an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play.
That kicked off a streak of 16 consecutive batters retired for Woo. He finished with his fourth quality start in five appearances this season. He struck out six batters, walked one, hit another and allowed two earned runs on four hits in seven innings pitched.
Woo was credited with his first win of the season.

The two runs allowed by Woo were in the top of the seventh. He walked Seager to lead off the inning and allowed a single to Langford.
After striking out first baseman Jake Burger, Woo hit designated hitter Joc Pederson with a pitch to set the Rangers up with the bases loaded and one out.
Texas third baseman Josh Jung hit an RBI sacrifice fly to bring home Seager and center fielder Evan Carter hit an RBI single. Woo got out of the inning after Rangers second baseman Josh Smith grounded out.
The sac fly from Jung and single from Carter resulted in the eventual final of 5-2.
"Coming home, you just got to have a really short-term memory and getting back to controlling what you can control and focusing on the game ahead," Woo said after the game. "It's tough, especially when you start stacking a few losses, one after the other. It can get frustrating. ... Winning today's game, that's the most you can do."
Woo's outing was bolstered by another pair of homers courtesy of shortstop J.P. Crawford and left fielder Randy Arozarena.
Crawford's two-run shot to right field came in the bottom of the second after Garver drew a seven-pitch walk.
Arozarena bounced a two-run shot off the foul pole in the bottom of the fifth after center fielder Julio Rodriguez reached with a two-out single.
Relievers Gabe Speier and Andres Munoz closed out the win for the Mariners in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively.
The two combined for five strikeouts, one hit and no free bases in two innings. Burger struck out swinging in the ninth but reached first due to a wild pitch thrown by Munoz.
The Mariners' two-time All-Star closer didn't let Burger advance past first base. Munoz struck out Pederson and Jung and induced a groundout from Carter.
Munoz earned his third save of the season in as many opportunities.
